Course Description
This course is designed to give the students a broad understanding of being “healthy” now and as they age. Some topics we will explore include:
-physical, mental, and emotional health
-nutrition, medicines, and drugs
-body systems, diseases, and disorders
-consumer health, community and environmental health
-safety, emergencies, and emergency care
Your grades are calculated like this…
1/3 of points from quizzes and tests
1/3 from notebooks *, labs, and class grade
1/3 from homework, current science news
You need to keep a notebook/journal.
Your objective (goal) is to create a neat, organized readable collection of thoughts, notes, pictures, questions & answers, and worksheets.
Other important notebook considerations:
-You must have a notebook or section of a notebook that is dedicated strictly to Ecology. If you are absent, get the notes you missed right away.
-A three-ring binder works best, but you can get by with a spiral-bound notebook and a folder.
-Keeping your notes up to date and organized will be to your advantage because open notebook quizzes are given weekly. In some cases, this grade will go into the quizzes category. Other times it will go into the notebook category.
* If you are absent for any reason it is your responsibility to get all missed notes and assignments. Board policy allows students five days to complete assignments after an excused absence.
Your positive participation in all labs and class activities is expected. Also, realize that nightly homework is a key component of this course.
Behavior
This is a learning environment. You must behave in the ways you’ve been taught are appropriate in a classroom situation. Respecting each other and the physical surroundings in which we work is crucial.
*I believe you will act appropriately and that our classroom experience will be very enjoyable for everyone. *
Class format
All students should be in the room when the tardy bell rings. Students should have all needed class materials with them at the start of class. Text, homework and all other needed materials should be organized immediately on the student’s desk. The “bell ringer” activity and objectives are to be started without teacher prompting.
Safety and accountability
Always fill out the “Destination Log Sheet” before leaving the class.
Passes are required when leaving the room.
