| As reported on October 27, 2011, the Senate passed Senate Bill 1, legislation that creates a program for taxpayer funded tuition vouchers and expansion of charter schools and the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program in Pennsylvania. Since then, PSBA remains actively involved with legislators and their staff members in the House of Representatives as discussions surrounding the legislation evolve.
There are only six remaining voting session days scheduled for both the Senate and House (Dec.5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14). In addition, the House scheduled additional days in December: Dec. 15, 19 20. Much can be done in that time if the will and the votes are there. These additional days leave plenty of opportunity for voucher and charter school expansion bill(s) to move through the General Assembly and to the governor's desk before the end of the year.
PSBA's website includes various resources on vouchers as well as resources on charter school issues that you can use in your communications with your House member.
Please contact your legislator by clicking on "Take Action" at the top right corner of this alert and you will find a letter prepared for your convenience. After completing the address information required, the letter will automatically be sent from you to your member of the House of Representatives.
PSBA appreciates the great efforts being made now by all public school advocates including parents. We must remain vigilant over the next several weeks as legislators are being approached by pro-voucher advocates and attempts to craft a compromise increase.
Feel free to contact me, Karen Devine at karen.devine@psba.org if you have any questions. Thank you for your advocacy efforts, as we all Stand Up for Public Education! |
