ACCOUNTING I

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

Accounting 1 is designed for the student who would like a strong foundation in basic accounting theory and procedures.  Emphasis is placed on the recording and reporting phases of accounting for service and merchandising businesses organized as sole proprietorships and corporations.  The student will gain computer literacy and a general understanding of how the computer can be used to perform various accounting activities.  A unit on business and personal banking is also included in this course.

 

TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:

 

1.1          Describe the purpose of accounting and the role it plays in our economy.
1.2          Demonstrate the effects of transactions on the accounting equation.
1.3          Use source documents.
1.4          Prepare a chart of accounts using proper numerical sequencing.
1.5          Diagram transactions through the use of T-accounts.
1.6          Record transactions in a general journal.         
1.7          Post general journal entries to the general ledger and update the account balances.
1.8          Prepare a trial balance.
1.9          Calculate and record end-of-period adjustments.                     
1.10        Prepare financial statements.
1.11        Update accounts through adjusting and closing entries.
2.1          Compare the accounting implications of different types of business ownership.
2.2          Differentiate between a service and a merchandising business.
2.3          Analyze transactions relating to the purchase of merchandise and record into special journals.
2.4          Analyze transactions relating to sale of merchandise and record into special journals.
2.5          Post from general and special journals to a general and/or subsidiary ledger.
2.6          Prepare schedules for subsidiary ledgers.
2.7          Generate trial balance and end-of-period adjustments.
2.8          Create financial statements.
2.9          Analyze financial statements.
2.10        Update accounts through adjusting and closing entries.
2.11        Prepare a post-closing trial balance.
2.12        Demonstrate competence in implementing specialized accounting via an electronic system.
 
 

CLASS MATERIALS:

 

All students will be responsible for keeping a notebook for this class.  The notebook will include all major topics of the course as listed above.  The grading of the notebook will include content, organization, neatness, and presentation.  The use of a three-ring binder is recommended but not required.  Other materials needed for the class include:  pencils, ruler, calculator, and notebook paper.  

 

GRADING:

RULES:

 

Each quarter you will begin with 100 points.  These points will count towards your class participation grade.  Points will be deducted for each of these class rules a student does not follow.  The rules include:

 

  • Be on time and prepared with materials (notebook, textbook, pen/pencil, calculator, homework)
  • Complete daily assignments and jobs
  • Uses proper conduct and behavior
  • Be positive and courteous
  • Use time wisely

Students who choose not to follow the above rules will have the following consequences:

  • Verbal and written reminder in student file
  • Student completes corrective action log, meets and discusses the log with teacher.
  • Same as number 2 above, only parent is notified.
  • Meeting with principal/assistant principal who decides consequences.

 

*Severe Action Clause:  If special circumstances deem it necessary, the student will immediately visit the principal/assistant principal.

                                                                                               

Please note:  When using the computers, the computer user rules and consequences are in effect.

 

Remember when you are in class, you are at work!!  Be sure to behave that way.

 

Students will have monthly notebook checks.  Be sure to keep your notebook current.  You may refer to the teacher's notebook.

 

Additional Note:  Some accounting problems will be completed using the computers.  Students will be expected to complete jobs during class time.  The computers will be utilized during class period and will also be available for use before and after school.  Encourage your child to stay if necessary.
