- Gettysburg (October, 2009)
Our 5th grade classes have been visiting Gettysburg National Military Park for many years. In preparation for this trip, we study the Civil War in our Social Studies textbooks and we do internet research on specific soldiers who fought in the battle at Gettysburg. We also read a historical novel titled, Young Heroes of Gettysburg which depicts the effect that the battle had on both confederate soldiers and civilian residents of the town. Our favorite part of the Gettysburg trip is taking part in a park ranger led activity. This year we hope to participate in the reenactment of Pickett's Charge.
- Acid Mine Drainage Field Trip (May, 2010)
Coal mining has played an important part in the history of Tioga County. This field trip allows students to combine their knowledge of history and science to study the social and environmental effects that coal mining has had on our local communities. We prepare for this trip by studying how ph (acids and bases) effects the growth and development of plants and animals. On the day of the trip Mr. Bill Beacom, from Babb Creek Watershed Association, provides us with a tour of the acid mine drainage treatments sites at the Anna S. Mine on Rattler Mountain. We then (and this is the fun part!) study two nearby watersheds to check pH levels and macroinvertebrate populations in each of these creeks. This requires that the students get in to the creeks with kick nets and magnifying glasses searching for aquatic life.
- Living History Program (May, 2010)
Our living history program is the culmination of a year of studying American history. Each student picks an important American to research and depict in a performance. The students find costumes which reflect the time period and the activities of the character they are representing. After researching the character the student writes a speech that describes the character's life. |
