National Honor Society News

Last year, Relay for Life was a huge success for NHS when Victoria N. ran it as her senior project. This year it has changed hands to Emily P., who hopes to raise even more than $700 for the fight against cancer.  Stay tuned to the National Honor Society Newsletter for more details.

National Honor Society raised money for the recent flood victims.  During lunches on September 28, 29, and 30, 2011 our classmates donated $88.31 while the NHS donated $50 of their own organization funds.   Altogether, we rose over $138 to donate to the American Red Cross.  Again, this money will be used to support the recent flood victims.

Connor H. and Courtney D. were chosen by other NHS members to apply for the scholarships given by the National Honor Society.  The National Honor Society allows 2-5 individuals to be nominated depending on graduation class size.  Mansfield is small, therefore, we are allowed to nominate two individuals.

The Fall NHS Fellowship breakfast was a success.  Every NHS member contributed something to the breakfast.  We get together twice a year and have breakfast at 7 a.m. in Mrs. Alexander’s room before our monthly meeting to give us a chance to spend a little time together.  This breakfast was extra special, because Sheetz in Mansfield donated 20 breakfast sandwiches and 20 hash browns thanks to Sam R. III.  Way to go Sam and thank you Sheetz!

In the winter months, NHS members helped our Librarian, Mrs. Lisowski, with the Read Across America Day by going to Warren L. Miller Elementary.  NHS members read a Dr. Seuss selection to many grade levels of children on March 2, 2012.  Students received instruction on reading to younger children prior to the event.  All members enjoyed themselves.

NHS also participated in Special Olympics.  Since Mansfield hosts the Special Olympics every year, NHS also participated in the Special Olympics.  Each member was assigned a buddy to assist and cheer for during there scheduled events.  Members were also responsible for getting their buddy at events.  Every NHS member really enjoyed this experience.

The last philanthropic event the NHS participated in was the Relay for Life held in Smythe Park on May 18-19, 2012.  NHS member Emily P. chose this event as her senior project.  She was responsible for collecting donations from members, attending meetings, setting-up, and organizing time slots to walk.  She did a fantastic job.  This is our fourth year participating in the event.
