Hello,
North Penn High School is proud to announce that we have recently opened eSchoolbooks to parents. For those who may not know, eSchoolbooks is a web based grading and attendance program that teachers have been using since the change of semester in January.
Parents and guardians should enjoy the ability to view their student’s grades and attendance whenever they choose. Parents may also sign up for e-mail alerts that will notify them when a grade is entered below the standard that they choose for their student. It also simplifies the ability to contact a teacher via e-mail if you have a question.
Recently, parents of 7th and 8th grade students were invited to the computer lab for an informal training by teachers and guidance staff. We are currently scheduling trainings for the remainder of parents. Many parents were pleased by the information that is now available to them anytime they choose.
If you could not attend any of the scheduled trainings please contact the guidance office to pick up your username and password, and the parent training booklet. It is easy to use, and the information available to you is extremely valuable.
Also, we are in the “spring” of things here in the high school. Spring is the time of year when we celebrate the hard work the students have put in over the year. Please take the opportunity to come to a concert, the academic fair, or the National Honor Society induction ceremony to help recognize the academic and artistic talents of our students.
Mr. David

MATH AT THE MOMENT
By: Mrs. Barbara Stager
North Penn 8th grade students attended Penn College Career Day in March. The students were able to attend labs and workshops in a variety of career fields offered by Penn College. Some of the favorite workshops attended by students were Hands on Paramedics, Get the Scoop on Plastics, Cooking and Tasting with Chef Paul, CSI Madigan and Health/Fitness Assessments. It was exciting to explore “the possibilities,” as one student stated. Thank you to Mr. David for allowing us the opportunity to do so!
The 10th grade Geometry students have been using the new in-room computers provided through the District’s CFF grant. It is wonderful to have ready access to the internet. They are currently researching the Golden Ratio and where it is found in art, architecture, nature and the human body.
Consumer Math class has been using the computers in the classroom to research topics such as buying a computer and preparing taxes. They used the First Citizens National Bank website to research various real-life scenarios from making purchases to budgeting.
The 7th and 8th graders have been using the computers for research, student-prepared presentations, and for concept review in a variety of forums. Ready access to web sights such as “The Futures Channel” in the classroom gives students insight into a wide variety of career opportunities and the application of mathematics in the workplace.

HOBY
By: Mrs. Jeanne Carlson
Aryn Hedrick, a sophomore, will represent North Penn High School at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar to be held at Millersville University on May 15-18, 2008. The Blossburg Kiwanis Club will sponsor Aryn’s participation in this four-day event which brings together a select group of high school sophomores who have demonstrated strong leadership abilities. This highly interactive weekend introduces students to distinguished leaders in business, technology, education, government, arts and sciences. ; HOBY participants get a realistic look at their nation, its people, and their own role in the world community.
In order to be considered for this honor, Aryn was required to write a 100-word essay describing the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in her school and community. As a semi-finalist, she was interviewed by a selection committee which included representatives from the NPHS staff, as well as several members of the Blossburg Kiwanis Club.
Congratulations, Aryn, and many thanks for representing NPHS at HOBY 2008!
STUDENT COUNCIL
By: Mrs. Selina Paulhamus
North Penn High School’s student council is currently planning an event so amazing, so incredible, so competitive…it can only be called one thing. GREEK WEEK 08!! The events of Greek Week encourage not only an atmosphere of fun and enthusiasm, but also education and service, bringing students and members of the community together to raise money for our school. Greek Week is a project that depends solely on the participation of the students and community alike. It is a week of events both scholastic and athletic that challenge the intellect of our junior and senior classes. Details on the events and dates will be given at a later time. Prepare for the challenge and LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!
SPRING MATH DEPARTMENT UPDATE
By: Mrs. Holli Smith
The math labs containing enough laptops for everyone in class are up and running. The teachers and students are elated with the new technology including Promethean Activboards and projectors. With these labs many things are possible.
The ACE Calculus class is learning that college courses are hard work. This course is a four-credit course offered through Corning Community College. Your child can earn college credit at a much lower cost and transfer those credits to the college of their choice. The students have course work and lab work to complete just like in college. They are enrolled through Corning Community College and they transfer their credits to the college they attend in the fall. So far, the class has studied limits and derivatives. These help calculate rates of change in real life, like how fast a cancerous tumor will grow. The spotlight student is Erica Clark. Great job!
Algebra 2 –Brianna Bubacz and Chris Southard should be recognized for their hard work and dedication. While working on algebra and graphing functions involving quadratic equations, absolute values, and translations, we have also been working diligently to prepare our students for the PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) Test. Students in grade11 have to take this state exam every year. When a student does not earn a proficient score or higher they are required to take the test again as seniors. At this time the PSSA is not a graduation requirement, but someday it could be. Please encourage your children to take their classes seriously, so they are well prepared for the exam.
The students have been taking practice exams and reviewing them. In the process we are sharing test-taking tactics and scoring methods for further understanding of the test. We also teach the “T” method of organization for the written portion of the math exam. These problems involve intensive problem solving methods and organization of calculations. Through the usage of proper terminology the students demonstrate a higher-level of understanding. This test was administered during the week of April 1st.
The Probability and Statistics class just finished up the semester with a poster project/contest. The top three posters will be entered in a competition for students throughout the state of Pennsylvania held at Indiana University of PA. Wish them luck! 1st place – Erika Mahonski; 2nd place – Allyssa Brosey and Megan Slater; 3rd place – Camren Smith, John Lamonski, and Thomas Bailey.
NEWS AND VIEWS FROM SOCIAL STUDIES
By: Mr. Rob Kathcart
7th Grade: As is normal, students have been very busy this time of year. Now that we have the bulk of PSSA testing finished, teachers and students can breathe a little easier. I commend the 7th graders for the outstanding effort they put forth for the PSSA’s. Way to go!
Students have been looking at the history of Modern China, since China is in the news so much with the Summer Olympics. Students have done well discussing issues surrounding China and the Olympics, particularly protests regarding Tibet and the Olympic Torch.
Some of our students have been getting very involved in Presidential elections. I am always impressed by young students taking an interest in the elections. It is a great start to being an active citizen.
8th Grade: We have been examining Pennsylvania history prior to and including the Civil War. Students researched American Slavery and the Underground Railroad. It was impressive the local connections found by the students to the Underground Railroad such as two homes that were used in Mansfield.
On April 11th, students were treated to a presentation by Mr. Ron Remy, a member of the PA Bucktails Civil War Re-enactment group. Mr. Remy is extremely knowledgeable about the Civil War and gave students a taste of life as a soldier marching on his way to Gettysburg. Students volunteered for Mr. Lincoln’s Army and dressed in uniforms, marched, and learned simple commands as soldiers of the day. Students were very attentive during the presentation and gained a snapshot view of what a soldier went through. My thanks to students that volunteered, particularly the girls.
