AGRIBUSINESS

Agricultural education is vital to the health and well being of our nation. Modern agriculture’s diversity, technological complexity, and financial impact predicate a highly applied and eclectic course mixture. The procurement of food, fiber, and shelter is essential to the welfare of individuals and societies. Course work will expose students to information and skills that will serve them well in collegiate and vocational settings.

Southern Tioga School District’s Agribusiness program is housed in Liberty Junior-Senior High School. Access and transportation to this program are provided to all high school students in the district.

ART

It is the intent of the Art Department to use art as a vehicle to develop strategies necessary for succeeding in the production of creative programs. In addition, students will be encouraged to appreciate their artistic cultural heritage.

BUSINESS EDUCATION

The Business Education Department offerings are designed to encourage business exploration for students. In selecting these classes, students are given the opportunity to do the following: investigate business related careers, learn how to become better informed consumers, develop keyboarding and computer application skills, and discover how business affects their lives every day

COGNITIVE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

This program is designed for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP) that identify the need for interdisciplinary support in order to progress through the regular education curriculum. A student may access this course each semester and receive one credit each time the course is completed.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications is a research based curriculum that prepares students to become proficient readers, writers, and speakers. Students will become skilled in the acquisition, synthesis, analysis, and transferals of information. This course is designed to reflect the integration of several curricular areas to lead to the completion of a graduation project.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Community service Volunteer service Program is designed to help our students focus on the needs of individuals within our local community and schools. This is consistent with the goals of our character education program.

DRIVER EDUCATION

The purpose of this class is to have the students learn and be familiar with the rules, laws, and skills a driver needs to be a safe driver. The students will also incorporate these rules, laws, and skills during the behind the wheel instruction out on the highway.

ENGLISH

It is the goal of the Southern Tioga School District English Department that all students speak and write with skill and proficiency. Students will become familiar with major literary works and with various literary genre. Students will study vocabulary development and the grammar and mechanics of the English language.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE

The goal of the Family and Consumer Sciences program of the Southern Tioga School District is to prepare all students for the roles of living and working in a global society, as they become members of tomorrow’s families, workplaces, and communities. It focuses on the needs of individuals and families, and integrates knowledge, skills, and reasoning processes with other disciplines, community, and work.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

It is the goal of the Foreign Language Department to insure that its students will be given a choice of three foreign languages to study: French, German, and Spanish. Students will be prepared in the language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language, be instructed in important cultural, historical, and contemporary information pertinent to understanding the people and countries that speak the target language, be expected to actively participate with a positive and purposeful attitude in class, and be challenged to meet the expectations for college foreign language courses.

HEALTH CAREERS

The purpose of the Health Careers program is to introduce students to a variety of occupations available within the medical field. Students will have the opportunity to participate in both classroom and field experiences. This program represents a partnership between the Southern Tioga School District and the Laurel Health System.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS

The Industrial Arts curriculum provides students with an introduction to industrial arts materials, power technology, and graphic communication. Students will experience both traditional and technological approaches to industrial arts. The purpose of these courses is to enable students to have a strong grasp of the materials and processes of the world around them and be able to apply this knowledge to make them more affective consumers.

The music curriculum is designed to develop and contribute to all aspects of music appreciation and expression.
