This page includes a number of resources I have used in the past or currently use in my classroom.  Many of the ideas are original, however, some are borrowed and some are a little of both.

It is with best intention that I give credit to the correct person.

I would enjoy any feedback (or ideas) you may have to share.

spelling

Cell Phone Spelling

Use the cell phone keypad to decipher your spelling or vocabulary words.

This is fun as an early finisher activity!

Stair Step Spelling

Increase familiarity with spelling words using this simple technique.

Alliterations

Students write alliterations (instead of the traditional sentences) to practice their spelling words.

Alphabet Codes

Two fun codes to use to create spelling and vocabulary brain teasers for your students.

creative writing

Ten Sentence Challenge!

Select a topic.  Then challenge your students to write

10 sentences (7 words or more) without repeating

ANY words.  This is a great language building activity!

I often will start writing the sentences with the students and assign the last 3-5 for homework.

The Describing Game!

Great idea for a bell ringer or time-filler.

If you have a 2 or 3 minute write time -- this might

also be a fun way to jazz it up on Fridays.

Kid of the Week Story Starters

I love the idea behind this creative writing project!

Each week a different student is selected (at random) to be the KOW (kid of the week).

That means two things.

1. He/she will be the main character in everyone's creative writing story and at the end of the week

he/she will be given a book of original stories by his/her classmates.

2. While the other students are working on creative writing projects the KOW creates a

Kid of the Week Bulletin Board with pictures and personal facts to share with the class.

I was able to faithfully use this for several years when I first started teaching 3rd grade.

Unfortunately, for the past few years I have been unable to dedicate the time needed to produce

this kind of writing.   I hope someday I will be able to find enough time to add this to my weekly routine.

student vacation journal

Have a student who is going on a lengthy family vacation and not sure what you want to send for work?

Here is a great suggestion!  Send this student vacation journal along with an on-level chapter book that they can read along the way.
