Student Assistance Program
A Student Assistance Program is a way to identify high risk teenagers who are having problems because of alcohol and/or drug use or who are at risk of suicide and/or other mental health problems. It is also a method for intervening and referring these students to appropriate community services. It is an intervention, not a treatment, program.
BEHAVIORS APPROPRIATE FOR REFERRAL TO THE STUDENT ASSISTANCE TEAM
--Academic decline
--Disciplinary problems
--Frequent visits to the nurse and/or guidance
--Decreased attention span
--Observable expressions of anger or fear
--Observable behavior such as increased talking, laughing inappropriately, poor anger management
--Observable behaviors such as overheard conversations about alcohol or other drugs, parties where drugs were present, or fears about a friend's use of mood altering substances
--Smell similar to marijuana on belongings
--Observable behaviors such as overheard conversations about feeling sad or depressed
--Observing a significant weight loss or weight gain
--Observing a distinct behavior change or change of friends
--Observing drug related or satanic related language or drawings
--Observing glassy eyes, red eyes, agitation, loss of interest in academic and extracurricular activties, frequent cold like symptoms, rash around nose/mouth, chemical smell.
