Reading Strategies that you can use with your child
1. Get your mouth ready: Say the beginning letter sound. What's the ending sound?
2. Picture Clues: Can the pictures help you figure out the word?
3. Say BLANK: Can you figure out the word by saying blank or skipping that word and reading on?
4. Chunks: Can you use your framing fingers to find any chunks or little words inside the word?
5. Can you find a smaller word in the big word?
6. Cross Check: Does the word make sense when you cross check the picture with the beginning sound?
7. Question yourself? Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
8. Reread: Go back and reread the sentence to see if you can figure out the word from clues in the sentence.
9. Ask someone: If you still do not know the word after trying these strategies, it's okay to ask someone.
