The students in second grade are assessed on nonsense words, making sure they know the sounds of each letter and they are also assessed on oral reading fluency.

If students know all of their sounds and can blend them the next step is recognizing and saying the sounds quickly. The reading goal will be to work on oral reading fluency. The student may be put on a computer program called Read Naturally to improve their fluency skills.

Read Naturally

This is a computer program that encourages children to read and reread a passage until they can reach their oral reading fluency goal.  This program also has comprehension questions and vocabulary words included in each story.  The children compete with themselves and this makes this program very exciting. If the students are having difficulties with oral reading fluency, I usually put them on this program.
