Business Exploration
Units covered in this class include learning how to make change, calculate sales tax, calculate the cost of a restaurant meal (from reading the menu to calculating a tip), construct bar graphs for reflecting business data, create logos, handle a checking account, prepare payroll, role play telephone etiquette situations, and prepare a simple business letter. The students also complete a project in which they consider the possibility of opening a sole proprietorship. The project requires creative thinking and writing skills, as well as actual topics that would have to be considered in opening a business. Accounting I Accounting I is designed for the student who would like a strong foundation in basic accounting theory and procedures. Emphasis is placed on the recording and reporting phases of accounting for service and merchandising businesses organized as sole proprietorships and corporations. The student will gain computer literacy and a general understanding of how the computer can be used to perform various accounting activities. A unit on business and personal banking is also included in this course. Marketing I This class provides an introduction to basic marketing functions and activities. Some of the topics covered include the marketing concept, classification of businesses, the eight marketing functions, the marketing mix, conducting marketing research, product life cycle, branding, and buying motives. In addition to marketing concepts, the class also is introduced to retail selling. Topics in this unit include the salesperson and human relations, personality traits needed by salespeople, obtaining product information, and learning how to prepare and conduct a sales presentation for the class. The class plans and executes a marketing project during the course. Accounting II Accounting II is a course designed for the student who would like to further his/her accounting knowledge. The emphasis of the course will be placed on advanced accounting procedures, such as payroll, promissory notes, depreciation, and uncollectable accounts. Analyzing and interpreting financial statements is also included. The student will be utilizing the computer extensively for completion of accounting activities. Accounting I is recommended prior to this course. Marketing II This course allows students to take an in depth look at the fundamentals of Marketing I and apply that knowledge to an actual industry. The class visits a number of local businesses and talks to the owners about the history, rewards, frustrations, employee requirements, and specialties of the business. The course addresses many areas of marketing, including market segmentation, promotion, advertising, ordering, record keeping, banking, and filing. Marketing I is recommended prior to this course. Business Law In this class the students will be introduced to different types of law, types of crime, elements of a contract, the use and cost of credit, contracts of employment, types of insurance, and the business organization. Various individual and business laws will be explored throughout the course period. Business Technology Students use the computer to prepare assignments dealing with punctuation, numbers, commas, capitalization, and records management. Examples of proper formatting for various types of business letters, memos, and envelopes are prepared by the students. A number of employment letters are also prepared by the student. In addition to a resume and letter of application, the students learn how to thank a reference, accept a job offer, and resign a position. Students complete assignments on reports, bibliographies, and footnotes. Agenda, minutes of a meeting, and telephone etiquette is covered. As a final project, the students gather the assignments submitted throughout the year and assemble the information in a three-ring reference book. The book is then paginated and a table of contents is prepared. These books may then be referred to in handling business correspondence needs in college, on the job, or in their personal lives. |
