Grade 7 Communications / Standards Reading

Developmental Reading is a primary focus for seventh grade communications. A literature compo-nent in which students read at least three appropriate novels is also part of this course. Students will use the Holt, Rinehart, Winston literature series which is a continuation of the Harcourt, Brace series used at the elementary level. The sequential research program is also introduced at this grade level. Guided student research will result in a one source report focusing on the history of civilization. The research process will include note taking, paraphrasing, use of direct quotations for support, and synthesis of information. The final paper will include a rough draft, a title page, a reference page, and a final draft. This report will be presented orally to the class. Students will learn study skills and techniques including outlining, mapping, and the utilization of memory aids.

Grade 8 Communications / Standards Writing

Developmental Reading is an important part of the eighth grade communications curriculum. Reading comprehension, reading for information, and reading to extend our cultural base will be stressed. Students will read three selected novels for this class. The class will also use a literature text. This class focuses on elements of research including personal interview, compiling a working bibliography, and using a note card system of organizing information from multiple sources. As part of the study of speech, students will analyze the audience, develop expository, narrative, and persuasive speeches and deliver these speeches to their class.

Grade 9 Communications

This class focuses on public speaking, composition, reading, and research. Research skills include the use of the Internet, the design and utilization of survey and questionnaire, and the use of video for information. A final multi source researched paper will be written in APA format. Speech includes the practice of impromptu, informative, and persuasive speeches. Three selected novels are read and used as a basis for composition assignments.

Grade 10 Communications

Students continue their study and application of the research process by developing a thesis and finding research to support their thesis. The final research project will follow APA format. Peer editing and the writing process will be utilized before a final paper is submitted for evaluation. Students will produce their final written assignments on the computer using a word processing program. Students will present their final thesis paper to the class in the form of a persuasive speech.

Grade 11 Communications

Students will complete an appropriate research topic of their own choosing based on American studies. The paper will include textual citations in an APA format. Each student will participate in a multi person panel discussion. Students will write summaries, paraphrases, and critical analysis of short stories, drama, poetry, and American novels which will be introduced in class.

Grade 12 Communications

This course is project based with an emphasis on completing the Senior Project. Students are required to identify a project, determine the goals, establish a time line, select a mentor, and prepare a written, oral, and visual presentation of their work. The research component should demonstrate the use of interview, survey or questionnaire, written resources, and the Internet. The paper must also reflect evidence of a strong thesis, organizational skills, and familiarity with APA format including references and textual citations. The speech component of this project will be addressed through the public presentation of the Senior Project.
