National Honor Society

PHILOSOPHY

The purpose of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of the secondary schools of the Southern Tioga School District.

All activities governing the national, state, and local chapter of the National Honor Society are specifically outlined in the constitution of the National Honor Society. A summary of these guidelines is presented below.

One of the areas of concern in recent years has involved students who are not selected for membership.  The following procedure, as outlined, is recommended because it adds objective criteria that Faculty Councils can use to assist them in this difficult, partially subjective task.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY GUIDELINES

Selection for membership to the National Honor Society is based on the following criteria:

Definition of Leadership, Character and Service

To be eligible for membership, a candidate must have a 93% overall for high school and be a member of the sophomore, junior, or senior class.  Possible candidates are notified following second quarter report cards.

Students who are eligible scholastically should be notified and told that for further consideration for selection to the National Honor Society.  They must complete a student activity information sheet.

The evaluation of applications falls on the Faculty Council.  The Faculty Council reviews applications submitted by students and the evaluations completed by their current teachers.  The Faculty Council will offer or decline membership to applicants based on the review of the following two areas.

1. Student Activity Application

2. Teacher Evaluation: Membership will be evaluated based on teacher input .  Only current teachers of students being considered for NHS membership will be consulted. Each student must display a majority of the skills outlined for leadership, character, and service.  Any student deficient in leadership, character, or service may not be accepted for membership.  The teacher evaluation form link is below..
